Omaha Shorebird Protection Trust is the volunteer group that works at the Omaha Shorebird Sanctuary, an internationally significant site for shorebirds. The Sanctuary is bounded mostly by the Whangateau Harbour and the open ocean, but sits at the end of a peninsula of residential properties. Cat incursions are an on-going significant threat to the breeding success of the birds that nest there, such as the NZ dotterel.
The cat owner education project has been well supported, which means
a half-page ‘spread’ in the local newspaper
distributing flyers to households in the neighbourhood
installing A1 signage at local playgrounds and other gathering places
installing a large sign by the local ice cream shop!
running a social media campaign with various prizes
